Clean-Up at Lynn Island: November 1, 2008

The Gallows Run Watershed Association and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are conducting a clean-up of Lynn Island. Lynn Island is a small island that formed in the Delaware River and became vegetated with trees and shrubs. The PA Game Commission guards the island to protect a pair bald eagles that nest on the island and raise their young. The island covered with trash and debris and is need of a clean-up after nesting season is over.

Join us in the fall with other volunteers to remove the trash from this bald eagle habitat. The DCNR will be assisting in the clean-up and is providing canoes to access Lynn Island from the mouth of the Gallows Run in Kintnersville.

DCNR requires all volunteers to complete the "Conservation Volunteer Application" ( www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cons/cvapp.aspx ) for safety reasons. You can also register by picking up a brochure at the Nockamixon Township building, at the American Grill or by visiting the DCNR office at the Lodi Lock.

Volunteers will need sturdy work shoes, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Poison ivy, cat briar and multiflora rose are brutal on bare skin. Bring a collection bucket, suntan lotion and water. This outing is not appropriate for young children. Parking is available at the American Grill Restaurant, upstream of Lynn Island. Bring a picnic for lunch by the Delaware and/or snack at the American Grill.

Fall is the prefect time to be planting trees, too!

Vollunteers are eligible to receive free white oak seedings for planting if they pledge to plant the seedings in the Palisades School District, care for it, protect them from the ravages of deer and help them grow into strong, proud, mighty oaks. Particapants are welcome to than one seedling. Each tree that is planted will be counted as part of the 1000 TREES Initiative. These seedlings were grown from acorns collected in Springfield last fall and raised over the winter in Upper Black Eddy by members of the Gallows Run Watershed Association Tree Squad.
